Trading card terms, explained plainly
A practical A–Z glossary for understanding card grading, variants, prices and collection management.
- Alternate art
- A version of a card with different artwork from the standard printing. Alternate-art versions are often scarcer and can sell for a premium.
- Binder
- A card album with pocket pages used to organize and display a collection. Valuable cards should be sleeved before being placed in binder pockets.
- BGS
- Beckett Grading Services, a third-party authentication and card-grading company. Its labels may include subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface.
- Buylist
- A price list showing what a store or dealer will pay for cards. Buylist prices are generally lower than retail or marketplace asking prices.
- Card number
- The collector number printed on a card, often shown as a number within a set total, such as 4/102. It helps distinguish cards with the same name or artwork.
- CGC
- Certified Guaranty Company, a third-party company that authenticates, grades and encapsulates trading cards.
- Chase card
- A desirable, difficult-to-pull card that collectors actively seek from a set. Chase cards are commonly rare variants, popular characters or competitive staples.
- Comps
- Short for comparable sales: recent completed sales of the same card and variant used to estimate current market value.
- Condition
- The physical state of a card, judged through centering, corners, edges, surface and damage. Condition is one of the biggest drivers of value.
- First Edition
- A marking used by some games to identify an early print run. A First Edition card can be worth more than an Unlimited version, but the effect varies by card and set.
- Foil
- A card with a reflective foil treatment. Foil versions may be rarer than non-foil versions, though demand and print supply still determine value.
- Graded card
- A card authenticated and assigned a condition score by a third-party grader, then sealed in a tamper-evident holder.
- Holo
- A card with holographic foil, usually in the artwork area or across the card. Holo and non-holo printings should be valued separately.
- Market price
- An estimate of a card's current value based on market activity. It is a reference point, not a guaranteed future sale price.
- Near Mint
- A high raw-card condition with minimal wear. Exact standards differ by marketplace, so inspect centering, corners, edges and surface.
- Parallel
- A visually or serially distinct version of a base card, common in sports cards and some TCG products. Parallels may use different colors, foils or print limits.
- Portfolio
- A digital view of a collection's cards and total estimated value, often with gains, losses and history over time.
- Population report
- A grader's record of how many copies of a card it has graded at each score. Low population can matter for value, but demand matters too.
- Promo
- A promotional card distributed outside a normal booster set, such as through an event, product, magazine or campaign.
- PSA
- Professional Sports Authenticator, a third-party company that authenticates and grades cards on a 1–10 scale.
- PSA 10
- PSA's Gem Mint grade. PSA describes it as a virtually perfect card, subject to its published centering, corner, focus, gloss and surface standards.
- Pull rate
- The estimated frequency of opening a particular rarity or card from sealed product. Publishers do not always publish official pull rates.
- Raw
- A card that has not been professionally graded or encapsulated. Raw value depends heavily on the buyer's assessment of condition.
- Rarity
- A card's publisher-assigned scarcity tier, usually shown by a symbol, code or name. Rarity helps identify a print but does not guarantee high value.
- Reserved List
- A Wizards of the Coast policy covering certain Magic: The Gathering cards that it has promised not to reprint in functionally identical form.
- Reverse holo
- A card where foil appears outside the main artwork area. Reverse holo and regular versions often have separate market prices.
- Set
- A named release group of cards. The set symbol or code plus collector number is essential for identifying an exact printing.
- Slab
- The sealed hard-plastic holder used by a grading company. A slab label normally displays the card identity, grade and certification number.
- SP
- A special parallel or special rare designation used by some card games. The exact meaning is game-specific, so use the set checklist to identify it.
- Toploader
- A rigid plastic card holder used over a soft sleeve for extra protection. It is not the same as a graded slab.
- Unlimited
- A later printing that follows a limited or First Edition run in games that use those distinctions. Unlimited cards may have different markings and values.
- Variant
- A specific version of a card, such as foil, reverse holo, alternate art, First Edition, promo or different language. Correct variant matching is crucial for pricing.

For PSA-specific grades, use the official PSA grading standards. Grading-company definitions override general hobby shorthand.
